Following a move from New York City to small-town Indiana , young Evan Goldman grapples with his parents' divorce, prepares for his impending Bar Mitzvah, and navigates the complicated social circles of a new school. It originally began previews on September 16, and officially opened on October 5, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The Broadway production closed on January 4, after a total of performances. The Broadway production is notable for being the professional debuts of Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies , who would later go on to star together in the Nickelodeon television series Victorious. Just as Evan thinks that maybe things will be fine, his mother calls to tell him that they are moving to Appleton, Indiana. Once there, however, Evan finds a friend in his neighbor, Patrice, who develops a crush on Evan while telling him how Appleton, Indiana is "The Lamest Place in the World". Later that month, Evan meets Brett Sampson, the most popular kid in school with his goons Malcolm and Eddie, and tells Brett and his friends to take Kendra, a very pretty girl whom Brett wants to date, to a scary movie where Brett can do "The Tongue".
Directed by Debra Clinton, with superb musical direction from Jason Marks and very, very fun choreography by Kate Belleman, 13 is the story of a recently transplanted adolescent whose life is thrown into a blender. As Evan navigates life as an outsider in a new town, his attempt to make friends and get in with the cool-kid posse unfolds in musical, comical form. The story hits many of the usual points with jocks and cheerleaders, nerds and geeks, leaders and followers, all operating in a junior high school setting. The ensemble numbers ooze energy. When I told Deb Clinton that I thought mine was one of the few families who had ever heard of 13 , she assured me that the kids in the show knew the musical well and that they had lobbied to have it produced in RVA. That enthusiasm and familiarity is evident consistently over the course of the minute, gloriously intermission-free production. Aside from some early sound issues which were cleared up quickly on opening night my and year-old daughters and I could not identify a weak link in the production. And the best part of that decision? The crowd was treated to a completely error-free night of vocal performances from an enormously talented and diverse young cast.
